Timeline:
0:00 - 0:10 The scene begins by introducing its first character, who is one of the main characters in the film. It is a woman, who is looking around a room, breathing heavily, this is emphasising her fear and from her facial expressions, we can see that she is confused/lost. There is low key lighting to set the mood of it being dull and dark in the setting which is as we can see a basement. We can see religious objects, across along with a bible and a small statue. This tells the audience that the house is owned by Christians.
0:10 - 0:13 A child appears and runs across the basement close to where the woman is walking towards. In addition, there is non-diegetic sound used of the child laughing.
0:13 - 0:22 The camera speed starts to increase as the woman follows the child she had just heard and seen pass by. Close up and high angle shots are used here.
0:22 - 0:28 The woman walks past in a semi-circle shape, as she does this, there is a wipe transition as soon as her front body is away from the camera to create 4 children stood side by side, looking very rough with blood on their clothing. They are all facing the same direction as if they are possessed staring at something near to where the woman is standing as she is glancing at them.
0:28 - 0:29 Another wipe transition is used to show the 4 children turn their heads in a sudden movement to change the direction they are looking. They all do it in sync as if they are being controlled at the same time looking into the distance at a mirror.
0:29 - 0:40 The woman turns her head to look at the mirror to her right, wondering and confused as to why she sees the children looking towards it when the mirror is covered with a loose fabric sheet. The woman turns back and sees that the children disappear, this illustrates that there is some supernatural activity going on and something bad may happen to the woman.
0:40 - 0:46 The woman starts to breathe heavily knowing that the children had disappeared right in front of her eyes, this shows that she is scared of the moment. She turns back to the mirror and removes the sheet because she is curious why the children were looking towards the mirror. She ends up only seeing her own reflection in the mirror in the dark basement.
0:46 - 1:00 The woman looks away from the mirror and hears someone behind her. She looks back in the mirror and sees a dark, shadowy figure moving behind her. The figure behind her that she sees, is dressed in all black and the face is covered. This makes the audience wonder who the figure is.
1:00 - 1:03 She looks behind her and discovers there is no one there. Her deep breathing increases, which implies she is scared and confused. She looks back into the mirror and sees the figure again clearly, facing towards her. The figure is in black clothing, with a white, pale face and is dressed as a nun.
1:03 - 1:05 The woman repeats and turns her head back again to see if the figure is actually there. She realises it isn't and is only seeing the figure in the mirror.
1:05 - 1:10 At this point, there is a jump reaction as the woman turns and sees the figure directly close to her face. The figure appears very scary like and the woman is taken back and shocked the fact that it is realistic. The figure then grabs the woman's neck with two hands and forcefully pushes her back to the other end of the room. There is a different shot used in this part of the scene, a close-up shot is used on the woman when the nun pushes her back. It focuses on the woman and her being pushed back. She then is possessed into strangling herself left with her leaving her own hands to let go of her neck thinking it was the nun.
1:10 - 1:13 The woman is in great shock staring at her hands, seeming confused. She starts to breathe even more heavily creating more tension.
1:13 - 1:19 Across the other side of the basement, a pile of chairs collapse on the floor and behind it is a small figure staring at the woman, bleeding out of its body. There is still low-key lighting, therefore, we cannot see the figure very clearly but it is different to the first which was the nun because it was dressed in other clothing.
1:19 - 1:21 The scene then changes from it being a dream to a reality as the woman screams and squeezes her eyes shut showing her paranoia. The lighting changes to high-key lighting.
1:21 - 1:31 She is now sat at a table along with other people with objects such as a camera and candles this could possibly relate to the investigation that they are doing. She is still in shock and distressed from what she had witnessed in her dream we can tell this by her screaming and crying and hugging her husband next to her. The curtains being pulled back brings in the high-key lighting.
1:31 - 1:40 She holds her husband tightly as she is still in fear. This creates suspense for the audience as they are curious as to what had happened.
1:40 - 2:00 Dialogue is first used here when the woman looks into her husband's eye's and quotes "this is as close as hell as I'm ever going to get". This questions the viewers as to why she stated that and what she had meant, relating to what happened in the basement with the nun and the other unknown figure.
Film Analysis
Lighting:
There is both low-key and high-key lighting used in the film opening of The Conjuring 2. Low-key lighting is used in the beginning, the dark colours set the gloomy atmosphere
High-key lighting is then used when the curtains are pulled back after when the setting is changed from the basement to the dining room. The different types of lighting determine the mood of the scene, the low-key lighting used for the nightmare makes it clear to the audience that it was a dream and the high-key lighting brought back everything to reality.
Setting:
The film was set in a house in Enfield, England, it used to be a council house and later became referred to as the Enfield Poltergeist. The first setting shown is the basement where an establishing shot is used to create the scary theme as basements are very quiet, dark and scary. The basement has religious objects such as a bible, a small statue of Jesus this implies to the viewers that the house is owned by Christians. The next setting in the opening of the film seems to be in the dining room where many characters are introduced, they are sat around a table with candles and the character sat beside the woman seems to be her husband as he was comforting her when she was distressed.
Costumes:
In this scene, the woman is wearing modern clothes as well as the other characters that are later introduced. The nun figure is dressed as a nun which makes it clear to the audience that it is surely a nun. The nun's face is painted white which is the makeup used, this connotes horror as usually nun's do not wear as such white makeup on their face, this is used to make the nun seem scary.
Shots, Angles, Transitions:
In the opening of the film, there are many low angle shots used when showing the nun to make it look like the nun is quite significant and has a meaning behind it, therefore they use this angle to represent its importance and it being more powerful than the woman. There are close up shots used on the woman's face to capture her emotions and reactions at the beginning. Over the shoulder, shots are also used to illustrate the view from the woman's perspective. The type of transitions used is quick cut transitions to create the suspense already shown in the scene.
Sound:
A lot of non-diegetic sounds is used as it is the woman's heavy breathing being heard much very often to show she is scared. There are sounds of children laughing when the woman sees a small figure run past her in the beginning.
