Editing Journal

Olivia and I began filming footage pieces for our film opening titled the "UKNOWN" on the 22nd January and had completed all filming by the 24th January. We then began editing the next following day on the 25th using iMac computers and using the editing software called Adobe Premiere Pro and had finished editing on the 27th.

Firstly, we had transferred all of our footage that we gathered on to the iMac where we then chose selectively which clips to keep and which to delete so it makes the editing stage a lot easier.

After selecting all the clips we wanted, we saved some footage elsewhere in case if needed. We did this just in case once all of our editings were completed and the storyline had something missing we could include those clips or use snippets of those extra clips. We then put the clips into the desired order on the Adobe Premiere Pro timeline. We then made some edits to the clips such as cutting to shorten the clips, adding fonts and colours for our credits and title and then decided where to position the text and the size.

Furthermore, we then had a look at the different transitions we could include when cutting into the next scenes. We then decided which ones we wanted to use between the clips and the duration of the transitions.

Finally, I and Olivia watched the edited sequence and made the decisions of whether to keep or eliminate any of the individual clip's original diegetic sound. I then went to look for some haunting, scary background music that would be suitable to use for non-diegetic sounds in our film opening. We then imported the sound and worked out when to introduce the background music and where we needed to fade the music out to hear the original sound of a specific clip. Our final decision when it came to sound was that we'd keep the background music throughout the whole film opening but change the levels of volume in certain parts of it. This is because it would create suspense at the start of the film opening as the music is quite creepy and eerie. The level of volume would increase at the beginning of the film opening, for example, the credits but decrease when there was dialogue and then we steadily made it louder again towards the end to build suspense until the final moment of the title screen.

Evaluation: Question 5

Q: How did you attract/address your audience? Below shows some feedback we had received from my focus group. We needed to know what people from the age bracket we had selected to be the target audience, liked and dislike about our film opening. We asked them a few questions to gather some realistic feedback.

Evaluation: Question 6

Q: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? The Internet I used the internet throughout for our prelim task and main task mainly for research and when finding background music for our main task. Using the BFI Statistical Yearbook site, I gathered statistical information such as facts and figures to help gather research in relation to our choice of genre and our target audience. I also used Wikipedia to research existing horror/thriller films to get an understanding of what type of conventions a popular horror film has and their elements as well as looking at different distribution companies.  Camera We used the CANON 500D to film our film opening. The camera was quite lightweight meaning it was easy to hold for long periods of time as our shots were hand-held. I learnt how to handle the camera, which settings were the correct ones to choose and other important elements. This helped throughout the process because a...
