Evaluation: Question 7

Q: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Preliminary Task

Preparation: We created a storyboard and a script as pat of our plan for the preliminary task, this helped us picture the way we wanted the scenes to look like and gave us guidance on what to do for each scene. We followed our storyboard consistently and found it to be very helpful and saved a lot of time when filming. We also made a shot list and a treatment to note down the ideas that we had and help structures it all.

Editing: When it came to editing our preliminary task, everything didn't go to as planned as we didn't really consider much of the editing we needed to do because of the shots we used. It was the first time we both had used the editing software so it took some time for us to get used to as we were still learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro.

Filming: We had spent some days staying after school to get some footage for our prelim task as where our filming was set, we needed it to be less crowded and less busy with not many or no people in the room. In addition, when filming it was quite difficult using the DSLR camera that we had because of lack of experience and so it took some time to set it all up and make sure it was the correct settings.

Main Task

Preparation: For our main task we were much more prepared when we were planning because we knew what we had to do for our planning and how to improve it so it is a lot easier. We were a lot more organised and our time management was much better during our main task.

Editing: Editing our main task was very much easier than when we edited our prelim task, the main reason being was because we had gained knowledge and practice so we perfectly understood how to use Adobe Premier Pro to edit our product. We had a slight issue with the sound - the background music was louder than the diegetic sounds from our footage such as the dialogue, we improved this by going to the audio option and changing the volume of the background music and we discovered that we could increase the volume or decrease it at any time we desired it by selecting the different points. Another factor that affected the editing was that when we exported the final piece, we then uploaded it to YouTube. We checked thoroughly before uploading it, to see if there were any mistakes and there were none. However, once it was uploaded on Youtube, we notice some major changes to our film opening surprisingly such as text moving, unclear images and movement of shots. We urged to remove the video and try re-upload it once again. After doing so our film opening was completely fine and there were no mistakes.

Filming: When filming our main task, we decided to take as much footage as we could on our day outs and during school including lunchtimes. This was because we wanted enough to include into our piece and for it to be realistic as it possibly can be as our main task was relating to a video diary. The only issue we had when filming was when one time using the DSLR camera, people had used the camera before us and had changed the aspect view therefore that affected our filming especially in the editing part because the resolution and aspect weren't the same on one part of our footage compared to the rest.

Overall, I think our main task was the best out of the 2 tasks we created. When planning, filming and editing we made many changes compared to what we did before and we were a lot more organised. I think that our film opening was very realistic and well presented, we used good shots and good transitions.

Evaluation: Question 5

Q: How did you attract/address your audience? Below shows some feedback we had received from my focus group. We needed to know what people from the age bracket we had selected to be the target audience, liked and dislike about our film opening. We asked them a few questions to gather some realistic feedback.

Evaluation: Question 6

Q: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? The Internet I used the internet throughout for our prelim task and main task mainly for research and when finding background music for our main task. Using the BFI Statistical Yearbook site, I gathered statistical information such as facts and figures to help gather research in relation to our choice of genre and our target audience. I also used Wikipedia to research existing horror/thriller films to get an understanding of what type of conventions a popular horror film has and their elements as well as looking at different distribution companies.  Camera We used the CANON 500D to film our film opening. The camera was quite lightweight meaning it was easy to hold for long periods of time as our shots were hand-held. I learnt how to handle the camera, which settings were the correct ones to choose and other important elements. This helped throughout the process because a...
