Analysis of Genre

Horror/ Thriller

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television, having numerous subgenres. Thriller will often include elements of science fiction, mystery or horror. A thriller must incite to the audience strong emotions, suspense and tension.

Horror is a genre of fiction which is envisioned to frighten or scare the audience. The main effects of a horror are to make people jump, feel nervous or on edge by something that is about to happen or already happened. A horror movie cannot be successful if it does not encourage fear into the audience and use a lot of it throughout the movie.

Horror/ Thriller Film Associated Production Producers & Developers

  • Warner Brothers
  • Blumhouse
  • Screen Gems Productions
Company Logo Advertisements

Company logo advertisements are usually shown at the beginning of film's, for example, the Blumhouse productions logo advertisement, the logo shows a dark corner of a room with one single light on the ceiling. The logo is then shown across the walls, this relates to the horror genre because, in many horrors, they are set in any empty room, it's quite dark & isolated.

Film Trailers and Advertisement Trailers

Horror/ thriller film trailers and advertisement trailers are a very crucial element in the accomplishment and popularity of films in theses specific genres. Many people tend to hear about new horror/thriller films through their trailers which are advertised especially on television, social media, YouTube and other sources. Trailers usually consist of snippets of the film which are chosen attentively and judiciously because the shots they present in the trailer must intrigue the target audience. The main characters of the film usually always appear in the trailer, this is to attract members of the audience due to them maybe being a fan of an actor, encouraging them to watch the film.

Camera

Camerawork used in horror/thriller genre movies play a very important aspect when creating an image and adding tension to a scene or the film as a whole. A lot of horror/thriller movies base their plot around the camerawork. An example of this could be 'Paranormal Activity' because a lot of the camerawork is being filmed on a handheld camera. In my opinion, I think this a very interesting technique as it successfully creates tension to the audience, making them feel on edge and frightened.
Another example of common camerawork used in this genre is 'Over the shoulder' shots as they illustrate the effect of 'intimidation'.

Lighting

Lighting is a major part of horror/thriller films, whether its low-key lighting or high-key lighting that changes to set the atmosphere or to create an image for the audience. The use of low-key (dark) lighting is usually used horror or thriller films this is because the lack of lighting creates suspense and tension in the atmosphere in the scene. Sometimes high-key (bright) lighting can be used to help the audience see everything that is happening.

Mise-en-scene

Some key elements that are commonly used and seen in horror/thriller genre films:
  • Ghosts
  • Paranormal
  • Shadows
  • Dark costumes
  • Isolated/abandoned places
  • Monsters/fictional characters
  • Dark
  • Blood
  • Bad weather

Evaluation: Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups? Many horror movies have a rating of either 15 or 18, due to the graphic content such as blood, gore, sexual themes etc. Our target audience is teens but does not include any references to blood, gore or sexual themes. One way our media product represents social groups is through mise-en-scene. The actors are usually on their mobile phones where it is teens stereotypically for teens to be quite anti-social and always texting or communicating on their smartphones. Also, the setting shows a young social group as in an alley you wouldn't tend to find adults unless they are walking through whereas teens use this type of place to get up to trouble and all sorts. The setting is important as it creates a narrative and creates enigma such as the audience wondering "Why are they there", "What are they doing there" and to think a bad event is about to happen. The clothes work by the actors are casual, ty...
