Initial ideas

First plan

Working title: Abandoned
Initial Storyline: Our idea was to start with a glimpse at the end of the film in the beginning and have the entire thing filmed on a handheld camera
1. Establishing Shot - an abandoned old people's home.
2. Medium Long Shot - A group of local teenagers are breaking in ahead of the character carrying the camera.
3. Medium Close-up - It then cuts to 3 girls who were with the big group previously, now on the stairs calling to the boys. The camera focuses on two of the 3 girls, the 3rd girl obviously filming.
4. Low Angle, Long Shot - Someone walks across the landing at the top of the stairs and heads into a room. Thinking it's one of their friends they follow him into the dark room, illuminated only by the single window with a streetlight directly opposite.
5. Medium Shot - The figure stands to face the window motionless as one of the girls approaches him and places a hand on his shoulder ready to turn him round, the figure then turns, revealing a bloody face and stab wounds in his neck, grabs the girl and proceeds to strangle her while she struggles. The remaining two girls then run away screaming still carrying the camera.
6. Medium Close Up & Close Up Shots - It then cuts back to the morning of that day when the girls are getting ready to go to the abandoned place and just chatting about trivial stuff. 7. No focus point - Then it cuts back to the girls running with the camera in the dark.
8. Medium, Medium Close Up & Close Up Shots - Goes back to them walking to the abandoned place chatting and laughing.
9. Extreme Close Up - Then it finally cuts back to the camera at ground level after being dropped and just a hand is visibly covered in blood.

We really liked this idea but decided not to keep it as we think it would have been too complex to fit into 2 minutes worth of film. Also, we had issues with using the abandoned building when completing a risk assessment as we were unsure if it was completely safe or even legal to go into the building.

Adjustments

Working Title: Anonymous
Storyline: We still wanted to keep the idea of showing the end at the beginning so we just tweaked the original story.
1. Point Of View Shot - Characters running in an unknown location.
2. Close Up Shot- Running ceases and camera is lifted to show one of the girls holding the camera. She then explains that somebody is chasing them and that she has been keeping a video diary documenting the previous events.
3. Close Up shot - Then cuts to the girls all laughing and talking at one of their houses. One of the girls explains that she is starting a video diary as 2017 is going to "officially be the best year ever"
4. Point of view shot - From inside the house looking out into the garden. No lights are on inside, heavy breathing can be heard in the otherwise complete silence
5. Close up shot - Cuts back to one girl getting a weird threatening message and them laughing it off and putting it down as a practical joke.
6. Extreme Close Up - Showing the phone and the message received, title will be shown here

Evaluation: Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups? Many horror movies have a rating of either 15 or 18, due to the graphic content such as blood, gore, sexual themes etc. Our target audience is teens but does not include any references to blood, gore or sexual themes. One way our media product represents social groups is through mise-en-scene. The actors are usually on their mobile phones where it is teens stereotypically for teens to be quite anti-social and always texting or communicating on their smartphones. Also, the setting shows a young social group as in an alley you wouldn't tend to find adults unless they are walking through whereas teens use this type of place to get up to trouble and all sorts. The setting is important as it creates a narrative and creates enigma such as the audience wondering "Why are they there", "What are they doing there" and to think a bad event is about to happen. The clothes work by the actors are casual, ty...

Media Language

Media language refers to the ways in which meaning is created in media texts. Below are some of the terms we have been learning about in our AS Media Studies lessons: Establishing Shot: Two-shot: Point of view shot: Over the shoulder shot: High-angle shot: Low-angle shot: Canted-angle: Pan: Camera Establishing shot : The opening shot in a dramatic scene that establishes the disposition of people and objects in the mise-en-scène. As such it is usually a wide shot, and is likely to be followed by a succession of closer shots. Two-shot : A shot in which two figures appear in the frame. Point of view shot : A camera angle in which the viewer seems to see with the eyes of a character in the scene. Over the shoulder shot : A camera shot in which the subject of the shot is filmed from behind a person’s head and shoulders, which are framed to one side in the foreground. High-angle shot : ...
